In 1997, The W. Garfield Weston Foundation and the Nature Conservancy of Canada embarked on an ambitious project to conserve critical habitat adjacent to the Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta.

The Waterton Lakes area is recognized throughout the world for its remarkable biological diversity and majestic natural beauty. This is prime habitat for Grizzly and Black Bear, Cougar, Wolf, Moose, Elk, White-tailed and Mule Deer.

Today, the project is the largest private conservation effort in Canadian history, with more than 100 square kilometers (27,000 acres) of magnificent landscape protected as conservation lands.
