Q. What is the mandate of The W. Garfield Weston Foundation?

Our mandate states that grants are to be given for projects in Canada for the benefit of Canadians.

Q. What are the funding guidelines and application procedures of The W. Garfield Weston Foundation?

In 1997, the board of the Foundation decided that it should become more proactive and focused in its grant making. Accordingly, for at least the next five years, its grants will fall into three categories:

1. Education.
Through a one-time grant of $15 million to the Ontario Science Centre, the Foundation has funded the Weston Family Innovation Centre, an area that will foster a greater understanding of science and technology among Canada's youth.

The Foundation's work is currently directed to scholarships at the undergraduate university and college levels through the Canada-wide Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship, in partnership with the The Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation.

We also fund tuition-assistance grants to students wishing to attend independent elementary schools, in partnership with Children First: School Choice Trust.
2. Environment
The Foundation funds land conservation projects in partnership with The Nature Conservancy of Canada.
3. Trustee-initiated grants
Our trustees seek out projects which meet certain criteria outside the two areas listed above. Unsolicited applications are not accepted for trustee-initiated grants.

As a result of the Foundation's current mandate, the Board regrets that they are unable to consider support for any grant proposals at this time.

Q. Does The W. Garfield Weston Foundation issue an annual report?

No, the Foundation does not issue an annual report.

Q. Do you provide financial support to individuals?

By law, the Foundation is only able to support registered charitable institutions.

Q. Who is on the Foundation's Board of Directors?

The majority of the Board is made up of direct descendents of Reta and Garfield Weston, the Foundation's original founders.

Q. Where does the Foundation distribute its funds?

Since its inception, the Foundation has given throughout Canada.
